Just a fifteen-minute walk from Chraggs, you can explore the delights of Aberfeldy including the iconic Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery. The distillery was first planned in 1896 and is the only Scottish whisky distillery built by the Dewar family. At the time, Dewar’s had already made a name for itself as a successful blended whisky brand. However, to keep up with quality and demand, the company needed to increase single malt whisky production to use in its blend.
For the Dewar family, Aberfeldy presented the perfect location for the distillery. In Highland Perthshire, Aberfeldy and the distillery had access to a beautifully crisp natural water source. The distillery was actually built right next to the Pitilie Burn which then joins the River Tay, the longest river in Scotland.
As well as practicality, the Dewar family also had connections to the area with the founder, John Dewar, being born just three miles away in the nearby hamlet of Dull. Production at Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery began in 1898 and still continues today striving to achieve whisky perfection.
Today, Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery welcomes guests in their whisky lounge and offers tours of the production facility so that you can find out exactly how Dewar’s make their distinctive and celebrated whisky. The whisky tour shows guests around the warehouse that has barely changed since the first production batch. The tour divulges the secrets of the honeyed richness as well as the double ageing process.
Visitors to the Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery will also be guided through an interactive exhibition which brings the distillery up to date with its high-tech bespoke app powering. Finally, after learning all of the secrets of whisky production, guests are invited to sample the delights in the whisky lounge. For those wanting to combine two pleasures, Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery also offers a whisky and chocolate tasting tour where you can tantalise your taste buds and learn more about your favourite foods and drink.
